Mississauga Blues Sr Men Give Up a Combined 133 points to Bay Street Pigs
For the first half of this match it looked like it was shaping up to be a barn-burner between two evenly matched teams. The Pigs scored first at the 5 minute mark after the Blues finally succumbed after absorbing phase after phase at their own goal line. A nifty chip by Spencer Karn off a 5m scrum almost put Jeff Hogle away in the deep Mississauga Valleys end zone at the 16 minute mark but he was narrowly beaten to the ball by the Bay St defender.
The Pigs scored again at the 20 minute mark, taking a rolling maul in from the 22m line in the first of what was to be many sensational mauls by the Pigs. They scored again three minutes later as the Blues' defensive line got very loose putting the Pigs up 19-0 at the 24 minute mark.
There was a noticeable shift in momentum after that as captain Cam Hurst leapt high to grab a line-out at the 5m line resulting in captain Sean Medeiros crashing over the line to put the Blues on the board. It was followed by a beautifully taken convert from the left sideline by Jeff Hogle and the Blues were back in the game trailing 19-7. A couple of minutes later, thoroughbred Cam Hurst broke the Pigs' line and went for a 50m romp with Joe Kitchen and Manuel Tellez hot on his heels in support. Kitchen touched it down and after a second convert by Hogle, the Blues had closed to within 5 at the 30 minute mark.
One of the teams hit a switch after that as either the Pigs switched on the nitro or the Blues powered down. The spectators watched on in shock and horror as the Pigs put up a remarkable 56 points over the next 50 minutes to make the final 75-14.
The Blues 1st XV have played two decent halves of rugby out of four in the first two contests of the year. Lots to work on in training this week.
The Blues' next game is next Saturday vs the Toronto Dragons.
