Mississauga Blues RFC 2nd XV Defeat Toronto Dragons 2nd XV 33-26
The Mississauga Blues RFC 2nd XV kicked off Friday Night Lights in dramatic fashion, coming from behind in the second half to defeat the Toronto Dragons 2nd XV 33-26.
The Blues looked like world beaters in the first half as Timico Smith took a quick tap off a Toronto infraction in the opening minute of play and dashed 40 metres before off-loading to Leo Payer who flipped it back to Smith for the opening score. Phillip Hill converted the first of 4 conversions on the night to put the Blues up 7-0 barely one minute into the game.
However, the Dragons regrouped and scored a converted try at the 8' mark to bring the game level. The Blues regained the lead a couple of minutes later as Blues debutante Artem Clement touched down off a pop pass from Miguel Toussaint after another long run by Man of the Match, Timico Smith.
The next two scores in this try-fest belonged to the Dragons and they found themselves leading 19-12 twenty-three minutes into the game. A converted try by Kwame Sarpong on a stunning run brought the Blues level once more but it was the Dragons that took a lead into half time, scoring a converted try on the last play of the half to enter the break leading 26-19.
It took the Blues only 5 minutes in the second half to tie the game once more as crafty veteran, Jordan Habete made a nice run off a Blues scrum, off-loading to Toussaint for the score. Five minutes after that, the Blues took the lead to stay as half-time replacement, Charles Doak took an off-load after yet another break-away run from Timico to score in the corner. Hill made the difficult conversion to put the Blues up 7 at the 52' mark.
Both teams battled fiercely for the last 25 minutes of the match, but there was to be no more scoring and the Blues left the field 33-26 victors.
